Not much! Therapists and counselors are generally one in the same. Psychotherapy and counseling are both treatments for mental health problems. The term psychotherapy is often used interchangeably with counseling, talk therapy or therapy. There can be a lot of overlap between psychotherapy and counseling.
Generally, counseling tends to be focused on one specific issue and is considered a short-term treatment. You may learn coping techniques and problem-solve the issue together. Psychotherapy or therapy tends to treat a broader range of issues and more complex problems. It can be longer term treatment.
Individual therapy and counseling needs vary as do treatment durations. Your provider will work with you to identify a treatment plan that is right for you. Your treatment plan and expected duration of treatment will be discussed initially and then reviewed periodically throughout your treatment.
There are various insurance plans. Please notify your insurance to verify the provider is in network and to verify coverage terms. In some cases, copays or deductibles may be required by your insurance. Coverage varies by plan.
